Preamplifier

A preamplifier, which is also known as preamp is a device that is placed close in the sensors of sound equipments to reduce the noise and interference. It is the one responsible for changing the tone and clarifying the signal in order to have a better quality sound. Usually, it helps the main amplifier to receive the electronic signal, making the sound louder but better.

The preamp may be built into an instrument to make a clearer sound, to home and live band performances for more quality sound. They can also be used in a music recording studio and they are also usually incorporated to a mixer. The preamplifier is also used in television and radios to improve the quality of the antenna or increase the signal in the satellite communication. Generally, it is designed to do the following things:

Increase the gain. The gain is the measure of the ability of a circuit to enhance the power of a signal. The preamp helps to increase the gain to have a better signal on the device.
Change the tone of the sound. A tone can include anything from the equalizer control, from low to middle to high frequencies, which makes the sound either good or not.
Lower the output impedance. Impedance is the efficiency of the signal to transfer from a gear to another. The ideal impedance relationship is to have very low output impedance that connects to high input impedance.
Altering from unbalanced to balance.

Generally, the role of the preamp is to increase a low level signal to line level signal. Common sources of low-level signal are the microphones, pickup, turntables and other type of transducers. On the other hand, in a home audio system, the preamplifier just simply switches from different line level without actually amplifying and commonly applies a volume control. While in audio system, the preamplifier only provides voltage gain but no current gain. The power amp, which is the second amplifier in the audio system, provides the current necessary to the speakers.

A preamplifier may be incorporated to different sound system devices in many ways. For instance, it can be placed to the housing of an amplifier, or may be in a separate housing. The preamplifier may also be positioned near the signal source such as turntable, microphones and electric guitars.

However, when you are looking for a preamplifier, whether they are in a form of pedal or built into an instrument, you need to check if its output or impedance is at a correct level to ensure that it can drive the device where you will connect it. You must also determine if it has the right output connector plug. Once you ensured the level of its output, then you can consider if it can provide the quality of tone you want. Preamp is a wonderful tool to have in your sound system as it has the ability to provide you a killer tone, but just like in any other device, choosing the wrong one will never be useful.
