Preamp

A preamp, also known as a preamplifier, is a device that is usually used along with sound equipment to help improve the overall quality of sound by preparing the main amplifier for receiving the signal. The preamplifier increases the power and sound of the equipment when it prepares the main amplifier. Using the preamplifier and the main amplifier, the sound actually becomes louder without diminishing the quality of the sound.

The preamp and the main amplifier is typically used for home audio system or for live band performances. You may have witnessed the power of using those two device when watching a live band performance, you might have impressed by the loudness and clearness of their music. These two devices are also used in some music recording studios. The preamplifier often has tone controller which typically range from low, mid to high frequency dials. These dials allow the user to boost the treble frequencies and bass frequencies. The modern types of this can also contain other tone controls. You can actually find controls for gain and presence. The gain adjustment causes a loud and distorted tone while the presence adjustment affects the crispness of the output sound. A preamplifier is also used with a television to improve signal and therefore get more channels for the television. The difference between the two is that the preamplifier is the one which changes the clarity of the signal and tone, while the power amplifier is the one that powers the speakers and the volume of the tone.

To do the task of preparing the main amplifier for the electronic signal it will receive, the preamplifier emits a low level signal to line level. The preamp is usually a part of turntable, transducer or pickup. As mentioned, the preamplifier is also used in a home sound system, and in this case the preamplifier will just simply switch to various line level sources that will control the volume without actually amplifying the sound.

The preamplifier does not supply current, it only provides a voltage gain which ranges normally between ten millivolts to one volt. This is what typically happens in a usual audio system. The power amplifier, also known as the second amplifier, is the one that provides the needed current to the speakers,

A preamplifier may be integrated with a sound system through different means. It may be kept close to the source of its electrical signal while being near to the power amplifier. This is usually done when it is a part of a computer or when it is near a high fidelity audio and entertainment system. It can also have its own housing or it may be placed in the same housing as the power amplifier. If the preamplifier has its own housing and it will be used with the audio system of a live band performance, it could be anchored to an electric guitar or to the microphones. The preamp is really helpful in having a great sound and music experience both at home and in outdoors.
